The Washington Elementary School District is excited to announce that Rhonda Warren, principal at Sunburst Elementary School, was awarded the Maricopa County Education Service Agency Exemplary Principal Award.
Warren was surprised at a celebration assembly in front of her students, staff and family. She was chosen out of 964 school principals in the Maricopa County for her accomplishments of cultivating a collaborative and positive school culture.
Prior to receiving the award, Warren explained how she leads her Sunburst community.
“Building a positive and productive school culture is my number one priority,” Warren said. “I believe in an open door policy, which allows my staff, parents and community the opportunity to communicate openly with me.”
“Through keeping a positive attitude and a team centered approach, I am able to hear and understand the opinions of all staff members,” Warren said. “It is our mission to celebrate all student success with students, staff and community members in order to promote a positive school culture.”
Due to Warren’s dedication and commitment to her students and staff, Sunburst School has been recognized in a national study for closing the achievement gap.
According to the Education Equality Index (EEI), students from low-income communities are progressing at similar levels as their peers.
Ten schools in Arizona were highlighted for closing this learning gap and Sunburst was identified as top performer in the state. Sunburst school has also received energy star awards for being an environmentally friendly and efficient school.
Additionally, Sunburst is heavily involved in the community and has been recognized as a top contributor in the annual Washington Elementary School District Food Drive, contributing 26,787 pounds this year.
They have also been recognized as a top contributor in the United Way Campaign, raising the most money per capita among WESD schools for the last seven years.
