Selena Llamas has been working with Expect More Arizona for nine years. She has played an integral role in making education a top priority and building education advocates in both urban and rural communities throughout Southern Arizona.

“I am passionate about education because it is the great equalizer and it allows students who grew up like me to build a life and career for themselves. Education can never be taken from us. We can take our education certificates to every state in the nation and around the world. My hope is that my advocacy work has helped others fight for their child’s education and for teachers to be compensated as the professionals that they are.”

Ten things to know about Selena Llamas:
  1. Is a fourth generation Tucsonan.
  2. One of her fondest moments as a child in the 1980s was watching The Golden Girls with her grandmother.
  3. Her grandmother took her to their polling location every election, which taught her the importance of civic engagement.
  4. Started driving at age 12.
  5. In the early 2000s, had the privilege of being an intern for HACU- Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities, which required her to live in the Midwest for several months.
  6. Graduated from Pima Community College and the University of Arizona.
  7. First job after college was teaching sexual health to students in 6-12th grade in schools across the state.
  8. Her role with Expect More Arizona has included working in the City of Douglas for the last seven years and she loves the community there.
  9. Participates in the Mentor 2.0 program with Big Brothers Big Sisters.
  10. Plans on becoming a foster parent.

Our Community Engagement team play a critical role in building those relationships by serving as the primary representative of Expect More Arizona in all corners of Arizona.
